Water Softeners Improve Dry Skin

If you and your family are suffering from dry skin problems, you would probably find water softener installation would offer many benefits.  Dry skin can be caused by any number of situations from winds, to swimming in chlorinated pools, living in a low humidity location, or being subject to extreme temperatures.   Using the wrong moisturizer for your skin type can result in dry skin.  Dry skin is uncomfortable as it often causes itching, and it’s also dull in appearance, and may even flake off when touched.

What many people don’t realize is that the water coming from their own faucets may be contributing or causing excessive dry skin.  If you live in an area where you get hard water, there will be chalk, magnesium, lime and a variety of other minerals which can cause dry skin.  Many water companies also add chlorine to the water to kill bacteria.

The Problems With Hard Water

If your water is considered “hard”, you’re going to have skin that is drier than if you had soft water systems.  As anyone who’s spent a lot of time swimming in chlorinated pools knows, the chlorine can eventually irritate your skin, causing severe itchiness and dryness.  The minerals in hard water can start building up on sinks, tubs, kitchenware, and appliances – and can even start to clog and block your water pipes.  A hot water heater which has mineral build up caused from a hard water supply operates less efficiently – and therefore costs you more money than a hot water heater that does not have hard water build up.

Another problem with hard water is that it doesn’t dissolve soap as well as soft water.  This means the soap lingers on your skin and on your clothes when you do laundry, and actually minimizes the cleaning power of the detergents. Soap is another chemical which will increase skin dryness if it’s not completely rinsed from your body.  While this is annoying to everyone, it can be particularly problematic to people who already have skin problems like eczema or psoriasis.  The trouble rinsing also means you probably have glasses with spots on them – and no one likes that!

Home Water Softener to Improve Dry Skin

Rather than pack your bags and move to an area with softer water, you can have a local water softener installation service come out and put a device in your home to filter your water.  Water softeners can remove much of the minerals and chlorine before the water reaches your faucets.  The result is softer water that won’t leave your skin as dry as the hard water; softer hair, and less soap build up since the soap will rinse away easier in soft water.

You can purchase water softeners that connect directly to your faucets, but these are primarily designed for drinking water only.  They would be highly inefficient as a source for all your home’s water needs, as the filters must be changed frequently and the water pressure is decreased as it travels through the filter unit on the tap.

Whole house water softeners are a better option for homes with a hard water supply.  There are many different types of water softeners.  The price for each depends on what size and features you need to soften your water.  You can choose between a whole house filtration system and a smaller, less expensive version which would work in a specific room or two.
