Water Softener Installation

Some people shy away from any project that involves either plumbing or electrical so installing a water softener might be a nightmarish task if you are so inclined, but if you are braver or handier that the average homeowner, then you might be willing to tackle your water softener system.

Take a look at the following instructions for some guidance on how to get the job done.

Tools You Will Need

  • Water softener system and manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Pipe wrenches
  • Drain tubing
  • Electrical outlet

Installation Instructions

  1. Decide where you want to locate your water softener. Usually the water softener can go close to your water heater but you should allow about 10 feet of piping to run between the two appliances. Of course you will also need to have access to an extra power outlet to supply electricity to your softener.
  2. Shut off the water and the power to the area. You need to ensure that your installation is safe so cut the power supply to your basement or the area that your new water softener will be situated. Next turn off the water supply. You should also drain the pipes of any water that might be in the lines by turning on the faucets on the lowest and the highest levels after you have turned the water supply off.
  3. Install your bypass pipe system to take water into your water softener. This consists of a short pipe that connects to the main pipe line to the line that runs into the softener. This will ensure that water flow is directed into the softener and then rerouted to the plumbing network.
  4. It is best to check for leaks at this stage. Turn your water supply back on and watch for any compromises in the pipe you just installed. If you need to tighten the joints do so at this point.
  5. Read your instructions and identify the drain hose and the overflow line that leaves the brine tank. Connect the drain hose to the softener unit using the clamp that is included in your kit. Next connect the overflow line to the brine tank.
  6. A jumper strip is included in most water softener installation kits in the event that the electricity is grounded to the cold water pipeline. If this is the case the jumper should be used but if you are unsure contact an electrician.
  7. Fill the brine tank with about four gallons of water and then add sodium to the tank as well.
  8. Reconnect your power move the valve into the service position to make sure everything functions normally. You can allow the water softener to run through an entire service cycle to make sure all the parts are in good working order.

Final Tips for Use of Your New Water Softener

While the average water softener can last for several years without any major problems, assuming of course it was installed properly, it always pays to be cautious with your appliances. Check your water softener regularly for buildup and any other abnormalities to catch problems in their early stages.
