The majority of water softeners that we install have a few moving parts that can last between 7 & 20 years. These parts included a piston, seal kit and a brine valve. If a brine valve were to wear out, you would notice very high water levels in the brine tank. When the piston starts to wear out, you will usually see some leaking around the mineral tank. If you are on your own private well, you may have higher levels of iron in your water. If this is the case, you may experience salty water the morning after regeneration. This is an indication of a plugged injector assembly or plugged drain controller. At this point it would be best to have a service tech stop at your home to inspect the system thoroughly. We can usually fix these water softener problems and have the system up and running in less than one hour.
If you follow normal maintenance routines, most service calls can be eliminated. Making sure that the time of day is set correct and keeping salt in the brine tank are the most critical maintenance habits to follow. A power failure of a few minutes will not harm a softener; however a power outage of several hours will cause a water softener to run when you are up using water. This will allow hard water to pass into your home. On a periodic basis, it is necessary to let the salt run low in the brine tank so it can be cleaned. We recommend doing this once every 3-5 years. During the life of your water softener +/- 30 years, we only expect 1 or 2 service calls would be needed. If you have high levels of iron in your water, we can expect more service issues to arise.
Water softener repairs can be expensive, before you call for service, please make sure that you have power to the unit, that there is salt in the brine tank, and finally, that no one has bypassed the system while doing repairs in your home.
